Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, is a significant Hindu festival celebrated all over India, particularly in Maharashtra, to honor the elephant-headed God Ganesha's birth. The festival involves installing Ganesha clay idols privately in homes, or publicly on elaborate pandals. The festival concludes on the tenth day after start, when the idol is carried in a public procession with music and group chanting, then immersed in a nearby body of water such as a river or sea.

Traditionally, the festival was a small, private affair with families installing small clay statues of Ganesha in their homes. The idols were worshipped for ten days with the family offering prayers, sweets and flowers. The idol was then immersed in a local water body. This tradition is still followed in many homes today.

In modern times, the festival has taken on a much larger, public scale. Huge, elaborately crafted statutes of Ganesha are installed in public spaces and worshipped for ten days. These public celebrations often include singing, dancing, and theater performances. However, the immersion of these large idols has led to environmental concerns. In response, many communities have started using eco-friendly materials to make the idols. Some even opt for symbolic immersion, where the idol is sprinkled with water and then reused the next year, striking a balance between tradition and innovation.
